I've taken a picture with that same half-open shutter problem -- in my case, it was sticky grapefruit juice that was the culprit (don't ask). I'm happy to report I was able to clean it and the camera is fine. I've also taken vertical pictures with the strap hanging in front of the lens...
I forget to tell someone about it when they are taking my pic. Zeut!
